Research Interests

General speech and audio signal processing
Fundamental aspects of speech and audio processing, including modelling of the human auditory system, perceptual aspects, signal analysis and representation, quantization, signal processing algorithms. Objective speech and audio quality measures for quality of service assessment. CELP and sinusoidal speech coding algorithms. Wideband speech coding.
Speech and audio enhancement
Estimation of true speech or audio signals from corrupted signals, estimation of noise parameters in the presence of speech or music, noise reduction, dereverberation, spectral correction (equalization), bandwidth extension.
Digital hearing aids
Multiband digital compression and expansion methods for use in hearing aids. Noise reduction and anti-howl techniques.
Loudspeakers and digital audio
Model-based estimation of loudspeaker parameters. Design of phaselinear and time aligned crossovers and of equalizers in both analogue and digital technology. Digital control of loudspeaker arrays.
General digital signal processing (DSP)
Theory of digital signal processing, especially parameter estimation, parametric signal and spectral analysis, prediction, smoothing, vector quantization, deconvolution, sequence estimation, linear and nonlinear filtering. Other applications of DSP, including digital and analogue communications and seismic signal processing.
Active and adaptive filters
Computer aided optimized analogue and digital filter design. Parasitic effects in active filters. Novel active and adaptive filters. Gyrator filters. Adaptive equalizers.
Electronic and computer musical aids
Use of electronics and computers in musical performance, including novel instruments and effects.
Engineering education
Use of multimedia methods in teaching. Aims of engineering education. Teaching engineering design. Group teaching methods. Self and peer marking.
