UNSW Co-op Scholarship Program
The Co-op Program in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications The Co-operative Scholarship Program is a partnership between UNSW and sponsoring companies. It combines the formal education of a full academic program in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications with training provided through carefully planned industrial experience. Students spend approximately one-third of their total degree program working in industry. The industry placements are organised with the participation of scholar representatives, taking account of scholars' preferences. On completion of a period of industrial training, scholars present seminars attended by colleagues, and industry and UNSW representatives. In addition to providing scholars with the opportunity to practice oral presentations, the seminars are a good opportunity to exchange views on industrial training. There are also functions at which scholars and sponsors have the opportunity to meet socially, and a program of industry visits to let scholars see the workings of sponsors' operations. to participate in the following co-operative educational
program:
A major part of the work of engineers concerns industrial productivity. The sponsorship offered to the Co-op Program reflects the needs in Australian industry for graduates who can provide technical know-how and leadership in projects and in management. Engineering graduates are in increasing demand where innovative solutions are needed and where rapid changes in technology are taking place.
Additionally, engineers are sought after to complete examinations and assessments on behalf of financial or regulatory bodies of technical projects and technology-based commercial activities. Through the Industrial
Training component, Co-op scholars have the opportunity
to work alongside industry professionals to develop skills
and experience in technical and general engineering management.
All graduates find immediate employment. Those finishing
between 1997-99 have found work with Alcatel, Alstom, Arthur
Andersen Consulting, BAE Systems, Canon Information Systems
Research, Cochlear, CiTech, Dancrai, Defence Department,
Energy Australia, Jtec, Lake DSP, Macquarie Bank, Motorola,
Pacific Power, Pacific Solar, Price Waterhouse and Telstra.
By now, some have taken the opportunity to transfer overseas.
How To Apply and Important Dates Prospective scholars
must apply to the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) for
admission to the BE in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications
courses in the normal way. In addition, a separate application
must be lodged with the University for admission to the
Co-op Program in Electrical Engineering. Application forms
should be available from the careers advisers at all high
schools, or may be obtained from the addresses below. NOTE: Selection is based
on an application and interview process. For Engineering,
interviews will be held at the end of November. To be considered
for a scholarship, students must be available for interview
at this time. Alternative arrangements are not possible.
