POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMS Programs offered by the School
Coursework Component All new PhD and
Masters research students must complete and pass three courses
(18 UOC) approved by the Head of School, normally in the
first year of their course. These are selected in consultation
wth Supervisors. All students admitted to a research program in the School are required to attend an induction workshop organised by the Faculty of Engineering. Attendance is compulsory. This workshop is not a course, there is no exam and is additional to the requirements of the program. Please see details at: http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/workshops/ Master of EngineeringThe Master of Engineering is 1.5 years of advanced study, which involves 3 courses and research leading to the submission of an original thesis.
Entry Requirements: An Honours degree in engineering or a related discipline from a tertiary institution recognised by UNSW. Master of Philosphy (no longer be offered in 2008) The MPhil is a 1.5 year, generic research program with a significant component of coursework. The program comprises 72 units of credit (UOC) 18 UOC of coursework and 54 UOC for the research project.
Entry Requirements: Completion of an appropriate 4-year undergraduate program, normally at Honours level, with a minimum of Honours II(1). Completion of 4-years of a 5-year Masters program normally at very good level, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 or equivalent. NOTE: Where appropriate, relevant
professional or prior research experience may also be taken
into account by the Program Authority in recommending acceptance
into the program. A unique feature of the program is the provision for Oral Defence as part of the examination process. This will ensure rapid examination. Articulation from the MPhil to a PhD program is possible. Supervision arrangements must be confirmed before enrolment. Candidature may be either internal or external mode. The Doctor of Philosophy is 3 years of advanced study, which involves 3 courses and research leading to the submission of an original thesis.
